Servers
If you have more than one computer in your
church or office, it's well worth your while considering whether you
could benefit from a server.
In our own experience, having a server has
made life so much easier in the office, and also has helped us when
we've been working out of the office.
Why
a server?
Here are some of the advantages that you
can get from a feed:the:mouse server:
- Data being held in a single place, accessible to all the computers
on the network, and being backed up on a regular basis
- Hot-desking - being able to sign onto any computer, and see the
programs and files that you are used to seeing
- Security - you may need to grant access for some files to certain
groups of users
- Remote access - being able to access your e-mails and files from
anywhere in the world
- Control - being able to stop people installing whatever they want
on office PCs, with all the problems and legal consequences that
can arise from that
What
software do you run on your servers?
For most organisations, we recommend considering
one or both of these servers:
- Windows Small Business Server 2003 - this is the primary server,
and is responsible for storing data, performing back-ups, running
your central e-mail system, and controlling remote access
- Terminal Server - this is a great idea if you have a lot of old
PCs that can't be used to run modern software, but can't afford to
replace them all with brand new PCs. A terminal server allows you
to use your old equipment, but gives you access to the latest software.
What's
the cost?
There are two main costs with a server -
hardward (the machine itself), and the software. It's possible to build
a basic server for around £400 upwards, but the software, because it
is primarily aimed at businesses, is more expensive than PC software.
The cost is also affected by the number of users that you anticipate
having.

Alternatively, if that's just a little bit too technical,
just give us a call and we'll be glad to guide you through the complexities,
and the benefits, of your own server system.
We have seen huge benefits ourselves since adopting
the server technology discussed here, and we'd be happy to demo the
system to you.
You may decide not to adopt server technology, but we
know for sure that we're not going back to the bad old days!
